DNS resolution in five observable steps

A practical trace from typed domain to returned address.

DNS / DOM/WIKI

DNS feels instant because several layers cooperate: the browser cache, operating system, recursive resolver and authoritative nameserver. Seeing those layers separately makes failures easier to locate.

Begin with the exact hostname. Check the local cache, ask the configured resolver, then inspect the delegation from the root and registry toward the authoritative server. Finally, compare the returned record and its time to live.

A useful investigation records each answer rather than repeatedly changing records. That creates a timeline, distinguishes propagation from configuration errors and keeps the fix reversible.
